Exploring the Legacy of Charles Lindbergh in Maui

If you’re seeking a moment of tranquility and reflection during your Road to Hana adventure, there’s no better place to pause than Charles Lindbergh’s final resting place. Tucked into the lush hills of Kipahulu—just past Hana town and about an hour and 40 minutes beyond our location—it offers a peaceful stop off the beaten path that most never see.

A Resting Place at the Edge of Paradise

Charles Lindbergh, the aviation legend who made the first solo transatlantic flight, spent his final years in Hana, far from the chaos of the citylife he knew. He is laid to rest at Palapala Ho‘omau means “the enduring word” or “the everlasting scriptures” in Hawaiian. Built in 1857 from limestone coral and lava rock, this humble church carries a quiet grace that reflects the slow, sacred rhythm of the surrounding land.

It’s no wonder the Lindberghs were drawn to this pocket of paradise. The crashing waves, that can be seen from the rugged cliffs, contrast vividly with the black lava rock below. This place is surreal and makes me better understand why Lindbergh wrote the words “In wilderness I sence the miralce of life, and behind it our scientific accomplishments fade to trivia.”

A Quiet, Soul-Refreshing Stop on Your Maui Journey

Visiting Palapala Ho‘omau Church is more than a historical stop—it’s a chance to experience  Maui’s spirit of endurance, reflection, and peace. It’s a beautiful detour on your Road to Hana trip. Bring a lei, pause under the shade of the palms, and let the view—cliffs tumbling into turquoise sea—remind you what truly matters.
