Eco-Friendly Travel Tips for Maui

Aloha, eco-warriors and adventure enthusiasts! If you’re headed to Maui—you’re about to experience a slice of paradise so stunning it makes postcards jealous. But hold on! Before you grab your snorkel and dive headfirst into adventure, let’s chat about how to mālama ʻāina (to care for the island).

We’ve rounded up some easy ways to enjoy Maui’s magic without leaving a footprint the size of a T-Rex. Let’s dive in:

1. Plastic? No Thanks.

Single-use plastics are so 90’s. Instead, channel your inner eco-chic with reusable water bottles, tote bags, and bamboo utensils. These small swaps not only reduce waste but also show off your eco-conscious style. Plus, you can conveniently pick them up right here on Maui just a few minutes down the road from the airport!  Down to Earth Organic (Kahului) has a great selection of products. Not only are these practical for your trip, but they also make fantastic souvenirs to take a piece of Maui’s green spirit home with you.

2. Carpool Like a Pro

Maui’s roads are a great place to practice your aloha spirit. Share a ride with fellow adventurers to reduce emissions and save money for some locally-made treats. After all, what’s better than cooling down with some ice cream or shave ice (which are practically main food groups around here)? A perfect stop for a eco-friendly sweet treat is Coconut Glen’s, just a 45-minute drive further along the Road to Hana from our tour. It’s the ideal spot to indulge after burning all those calories rappelling down waterfalls with us!

3. Leave No Trace

Maui’s rule #1: If you pack it in, pack it out. That includes snack wrappers, water bottles, and yes, even that rogue flip-flop you thought you lost. Let’s keep Maui’s trails and beaches the beautiful places we love to excape to!

4. Be a Coral Cheerleader, Not a Reef Wrestler

Touching coral is a hard no. Why? Because it’s alive, and breaking it is like stomping on Maui’s soul. Swim, snorkel, or paddle with respect—like the eco-hero you are. Think of coral reefs as Maui’s VIP section. They’re colorful, vibrant, and crucial to marine life. Ditch the chemical sunscreens and slather on reef-safe options instead. (Pro tip: If it’s labeled “oxybenzone-free,” you’re golden.)

5. Adventure Responsibly

Planning to rappel with us? Show up with lightweight, quick-dry clothing, biodegradable sunscreen, and all the good vibes. We’ll handle the ropes and safety gear—you just focus on making those epic waterfall descents Instagram-worthy.
(Pro-tip: Bring your Go-Pro, our guides can equip you with a Go-Pro mounted helmet – so you can keep your hands free for rappelling!)

6. Respect Maui’s Sacred Sites

Showing hōʻihi (respect) for Hawaiian culture and the land, or ‘āina, which is deeply sacred and central to Hawaii’s traditions. Take time to learn about Maui’s history, ask your guides questions, and treat sacred sites with reverence. Removing rocks or sand is kapu (forbidden), as these are considered sacred and vital to the island’s balance. By honoring these customs, you’ll not only help preserve Maui’s beauty but also create a deeper, more meaningful connection to the island.

7. Volunteer Your Time

Why not spend a day giving back? Join a beach cleanup or help reforest native plants. Think of it as your VIP backstage pass to the real Maui—minus the crowds. For volunteer opportunities, check out Hands On Maui. From beach cleanups to educational programs, it’s a great way to make your trip even more meaningful!
